Understanding image rotation issues caused by hidden metadata
For all plans on the Locable Marketing Platform
If you've uploaded an image and it appears rotated (e.g., sideways or upside down), this is usually caused by orientation metadata embedded in the image file.
Many smartphones and digital cameras store information about how the image was originally taken (portrait vs. landscape, tilted, etc.) as hidden EXIF metadata.
While some programs (like photo apps on your phone or computer) automatically read and correct this metadata, web browsers and websites don’t always do the same.
How to Fix It:
To ensure your image appears correctly:
-
Open and re-save the image in an image editor or screenshot tool, which typically strips away the metadata.
-
Rotate and export it using a tool like:
-
Preview (on Mac)
-
Paint or Snipping Tool (on Windows)
-
Free online tools
-
-
Upload the new version without the metadata and it should appear correctly on your web page.
NOTE: Here are a couple of free online tools to help you remove metadata, compress images, and a variety of other image edits:
You can also edit your image file in Windows or Mac to remove properties, location data, and personal information.
This quick step usually solves the issue and prevents future rotation problems.
